Used some 6 000 years ago by the Egyptians, gold, and the art of gilding, remain today the emblem of beauty.

The craft of gilder ornemanist established itself at the time of the Sun King, Louis XIV and made Versailles renowned for it’s beautifully gilded furniture, walls and ceilings.

Which techniques ?

Application of gold leaf over different materials using two methods :

Gilding in tempera called “water gilding
A traditional technique which can produce shining parts after burnishing with a tool made of agatha stone

Oil gilding called “compounding gilding
A faster technique that does not allow any burnishing.

These techniques require careful preparation in order to ensure the best results.

The gold used comes in the form of a book of leaves and varies according to the following qualities :

pure yellow basic gold: 100% gold, 24 carat
dark gold
sharp half-yellow gold (most commonly used)
lemon-yellow gold
white gold

special gold for exterior decoration

Copper and silver leaves can also ensure materials and brightness effects.
